The Kingdom of Morocco has pledged US$5 million (Around 50 million dirhams) to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for its 2026–2030 strategic period, the country's first-ever donation and the largest by a North African nation, according to a statement released Wednesday. «This contribution reflects our shared belief that investing in vaccines is an investment in the future stability and prosperity of our continent», said Amine Tehraoui, Minister of Health and Social Protection. «Drawing lessons from the recent pandemic, and strengthening cooperation with partners such as the World Health Organization, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to immunisation through solidarity and co-development, ensuring every child has the right to protection and opportunity». The pledge underscores Morocco's conviction that no child, anywhere, should be deprived of life-saving vaccines. «This contribution is part of the ongoing fruitful cooperation between Morocco and Gavi, and reflects our country's commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at ensuring equitable and sustainable access to vaccination, especially for the most vulnerable», added Nadia Fettah Alaoui, Minister of Economy and Finance. Gavi CEO Dr Sania Nishtar welcomed Morocco's leadership: «Eighty percent of Gavi's resources during our next strategic period will be committed to Africa, and in this context, Morocco's leadership will play a central role. During my recent visit, I was impressed by King Mohammed VI's strategic vision for vaccine manufacturing on the continent, which sets a benchmark for other nations». Morocco's pledge comes as Gavi prepares to launch Gavi 6.0, an ambitious strategy aiming to protect 500 million children between 2026 and 2030. Immunisation remains one of the most effective public health tools, saving 4–5 million lives annually and yielding an estimated US$54 return for every dollar invested. The next phase also includes Gavi Leap, a reform initiative strengthening country ownership, sovereignty, and self-reliance through co-investment and alignment with national priorities. As a public-private partnership, Gavi works with lower-income countries to pool demand, secure affordable vaccines, and support long-term health system strengthening.
