On the fiftieth anniversary of the mass and arbitrary expulsion of Moroccan residents legally living in Algeria in 1975, the International Coalition in Support of Families of Moroccan Origin Expelled from Algeria – 1975 has renewed its call for the Algerian authorities to issue an official public apology and to take responsibility for the deportation. In its statement, the coalition recalled that around 45,000 people were forcibly removed from their homes and workplaces and taken to the Moroccan-Algerian border in what it described as «humiliating and inhumane» conditions. Entire families, including those from mixed Moroccan-Algerian households, were separated, stripped of their belongings, and placed in holding centers, the coalition said in a statement received by Yabiladi. The coalition stressed that the Algerian state has still not formally recognized these events, noting that the trauma continues to affect the victims and their descendants. Under the slogan «Memory Against Forgetting: For the Recognition of the Rights of Moroccan Families Expelled from Algeria in 1975», it is calling for the return of confiscated property and for both material and moral compensation. Founded on February 27, 2021, the coalition said it remains committed to pursuing international advocacy and seeking global mechanisms for redress. It added that its program commemorating the 50th anniversary will continue, following the roadmap adopted in October 2025 in Geneva, with the aim of further shedding light on the events of December 1975.
