DR ‹ › The Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, announced on Monday that the export of frozen sardines will be banned as of February 1. Responding to an oral question on rising fish prices in national markets at the House of Representatives, she said the measure aims to strengthen domestic supply and keep prices at acceptable levels. Driouich explained that fish prices are governed by supply and demand and are currently relatively reasonable, taking into account several factors, including weather conditions, the cost of fishing trips, cold-chain logistics, as well as the margins applied by intermediaries and retailers. In this context, she highlighted the government's efforts to ensure adequate supplies to national markets, in close coordination with the relevant authorities, in order to regulate prices and combat illegal practices and speculation. She also announced that specific measures will be implemented during the month of Ramadan to guarantee the availability of frozen fish on the local market. More broadly, she said the government is working to roll out a strategy focused primarily on the sustainability of fisheries. This strategy is supported by efforts to preserve fishery resources, strengthen control mechanisms, develop marketing infrastructure, and upgrade local fish markets.
