DR ‹ › Several European supermarket chains say that weeks of heavy rainfall in Morocco have complicated the supply of vegetables and soft fruits to their stores. Speaking to Belgium's VRT News on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Delhaize, a Belgian supermarket chain, said that «supply is difficult», explaining that «all transport from North Africa has to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, and that's currently very difficult». The chain added that while «there's sufficient inventory», promotions on certain affected products «cannot be offered for the time being». Belgian retailer Colruyt also reported reduced deliveries. «There are daily deliveries to the stores, but there are simply fewer of them. For example, if you still want to buy eggplant after a busy Saturday evening, you might not be able to find them», a spokesperson said. Albert Heijn, the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, has warned customers that shelves may be less stocked than usual due to bad weather in Spain and Morocco. However, a company representative stressed: «Supply is more difficult than usual, but everything is available». French retail giant Carrefour similarly pointed to logistical challenges, stating: «Our product range remains the same, but some products are more difficult to deliver». The retailer added that promotions may be canceled and that minimal price increases are possible. Morocco has recently experienced adverse weather conditions, along with disruptions to maritime connections with Spain due to storms affecting the Strait of Gibraltar.
