The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is scheduled to visit Agadir in January 2026. The working visit is intended to strengthen cooperation between the Canary Islands and Morocco's Souss-Massa region in key sectors such as tourism, water management, the blue economy, culture, and sports, according to local media. This week, a delegation from the Canary Islands regional government traveled to Agadir to prepare for Clavijo's trip. After talks with Karim Achengli, president of the Souss-Massa regional council and member of the RNI, both sides agreed to establish a bilateral Canary Islands–Agadir commission. The new framework will be responsible for proposing concrete cooperation initiatives in strategic areas for both regions. Since June 2023, the Canary Islands have been governed by a right-wing coalition formed by the Canary Coalition and the People's Party, which has sought to usher in a new era in relations with Morocco. Clavijo has placed Morocco at the center of his «Plan for Africa», unveiled on March 24. In October 2024, during a visit to Rabat, Fernando Clavijo met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where he reaffirmed his support for the position adopted in March 2022 by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, backing Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
