Staffan de Mistura, special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara / Archive - DR ‹ › Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Western Sahara, has resumed his diplomatic efforts. Recently, he met with Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, in Oslo. «Norway supports Mr. de Mistura's efforts to bring together the stakeholders and achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution», declared the Norwegian Foreign Minister on social media. The UN envoy's previous official engagement was on November 5, during a virtual press conference with the deputy spokesperson of the UN Secretary-General. On that occasion, De Mistura highlighted that Resolution 2797, adopted by the Security Council on October 31, «clearly identifies the stakeholders: Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania». He further clarified that the resolution «mentions the principle of self-determination» while also making «an explicit reference to Moroccan sovereignty». On the same day, De Mistura had a phone conversation with Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Vershinin. As the year 2025 approaches its end, it seems increasingly unlikely that Staffan de Mistura will succeed in bringing together the four parties involved in the Western Sahara issue.
