Algeria and Mauritania have finalized two cooperation agreements in the field of defense. «The first concerns the area of defense, while the second focuses on the protection of classified information», reports the official website of the Mauritanian army. The agreements were signed yesterday in Algiers by Mauritanian Minister of Defense Hanana Ould Sidi and Algerian Deputy Minister of Defense and Chief of the Army, General Saïd Chengriha. In his speech, the Algerian official emphasized «the strategic importance of the relations» between the two nations and the «central role of bilateral cooperation for the stability of the entire region», according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, shared by Algerian media. «In Algeria, we believe that the security and stability of our two countries require the highest level of consensus, coordination, and consultation», Saïd Chengriha added. For his part, the Mauritanian Minister of Defense described military cooperation between Mauritania and Algeria as «an example to follow in the Maghreb region», according to the Mauritanian army's website. It is worth noting that in October 2024, during a visit by General Saïd Chengriha to Nouakchott, the Algerian and Mauritanian armies had already signed a defense cooperation agreement focused on intelligence sharing.
