Moroccan human rights activist Sion Assidon passed away on Friday, November 7, after nearly three months in a coma, his family and friends announced. A long-time advocate for the Palestinian cause and a vocal critic of Israel, Assidon, 78, died following complications from a severe lung infection. In a statement, his relatives expressed gratitude to the medical staff and visitors who supported him during his illness, noting that he had shown brief signs of improvement before his condition worsened. They also called for full transparency regarding the circumstances of his death, urging forensic verification of the case. Assidon, who coordinated BDS Morocco, was found unconscious at his home in Mohammedia last August with multiple blows and skull fractures, raising suspicions of an assault. Police initially suggested a gardening accident, but his friends and fellow activists rejected this explanation, pointing to overlooked details such as medical and forensic reports. They believe his outspoken activism against Israel's war on Gaza and Morocco's normalization with Tel Aviv may have made him a target. Before his collapse, Assidon had led several initiatives, including a protest at Casablanca's port against a ship allegedly carrying military supplies to Israel.
