DR ‹ › The European Union has once again expressed its backing for Morocco's autonomy initiative concerning Western Sahara. «The EU, with full consensus from its member states, revised its stance on Western Sahara during the EU-Morocco Association Council meeting on January 29, 2026, bringing it in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025)», announced Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in response to a written inquiry from Irish MEP Lynn Boylan. Ms. Kallas reiterated the EU's support for the «efforts of the UN Secretary-General and the Personal Envoy to facilitate and steer negotiations, grounded in Morocco's autonomy proposal, aimed at achieving a just, lasting, and mutually agreeable resolution to the conflict, in line with the United Nations Charter, while welcoming any constructive suggestions from the involved parties in response to this proposal». She wrapped up her statement by urging «the parties to engage in dialogue without preconditions, using Morocco's autonomy proposal as a foundation, to arrive at a definitive and mutually acceptable political solution that ensures the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara. She emphasized that genuine autonomy could be the most feasible outcome and encouraged the parties to present proposals for a mutually acceptable conclusive solution». MEP Lynn Boylan is noted for her close ties with the Polisario.
