DR ‹ › The arrival of seasonal workers recently selected in Morocco for the strawberry and red fruit harvest in Spain's Huelva region has been delayed due to transport disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions. The delays follow the closure of the Port of Tarifa and the suspension of ferry services between Tarifa and Port of Tangier. The agricultural organization Asaja-Huelva told Europa Press that the severe weather has also made it difficult for workers to reach the Tangier port, as several roads in Morocco have been affected. Given the situation, the organization decided to keep the trips suspended at least until Friday, while noting that there is no guarantee that travel will be able to resume on that date. However, it stressed that the delay does not mean a halt to the harvest, explaining that recruitment from countries of origin accounts for only 15% of the total workforce. In this context, Asaja-Huelva said that production continues as normal, although many farm owners are particularly keen on the arrival of Moroccan workers, citing their experience and the level of trust they have built with agricultural companies. The first group of Moroccan seasonal workers began arriving in the Huelva region on January 2, and the total number of workers participating in the program this season is expected to exceed 21,400, coming from Morocco and several other countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Senegal, Mauritania, and Paraguay.
