DR ‹ › Amina Bouayach, President of Morocco's National Human Rights Council (CNDH), chaired on Monday morning the meeting of the African Migration Group at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, with representatives from 23 African countries in attendance. The meeting is part of the work of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions, within which Morocco, represented by Bouayach, chairs the working group on migration and the rights of migrants. In addition to Morocco, the group includes Nigeria, Kenya, Burundi, Zimbabwe, as well as Mauritius and Mauritania as observer members. In her opening remarks, Bouayach warned of the impact of the global crisis on human rights, particularly migrants' rights, in a context marked by declining trust in international institutions. Amid the rise of unilateral policies restricting migrants' rights, the politicization of migration issues, and attempts, especially in Northern countries, to frame migration solely as a security concern, alongside growing geopolitical tensions, weakening international solidarity, and limited resources, Bouayach stressed that national human rights institutions remain at the forefront of efforts to protect and promote the rights of people on the move, thanks to their broad mandates. «We aim, through our international advocacy in Geneva and New York, to develop new forms of cooperation that ensure better protection of migrants' rights within our African space», she said. The gathering in Geneva is being held on the sidelines of the participation of national human rights institutions this week in the General Assembly and annual conference of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), currently chaired by Amina Bouayach.
